A Sister in Service
Being a sister to a service member is a bit different than being a child or spouse. Growing up with siblings who’ve loved you, looked after you and been by your side, and then having to watch them leave you and your family at the height of their youth is difficult.
It’s more than difficult.
It’s living through a combined six tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. It’s moving your family across five different states and three different countries just to try and stay together. It’s waiting an entire decade just to finally have a Christmas with all of the ones you love.
It’s a sacrifice.
I’ve had three siblings serve on tours for the US Army. My sister worked on Apache Helicopters for several years, my step-brother has been in the Army ten years in the 101st Airborne division, and my brother has now been in the Army 13 years and counting.
Each have their own unique experience, and each have touched and influenced my life in innumerable ways. Their first-hand accounts and calm demeanor have given me the advantage of being able to wade through misguided accounts perpetrated by the media covering world affairs, and their wisdom has given me invaluable insight into what issues are of true concern.
Above all, I am proud of their service and the sacrifice they’ve made in their lives to honor our country. The values each display – loyalty, duty, respect, service, honor, integrity, and personal courage – are all something I strive for each day. I am so thankful to have these inspirational role models in my life, and I couldn’t be a more proud sister.
